8,000 meter peaks with Himalayan Sherpa Trek & Expedition |
The Ultimate Climbing Challenge Climbing all 14 of the 8,000 meter peaks is a formidable challenge, undoubtedly one of the most difficult human endeavors possible. It would be easier and, of course, much safer to win a Super Bowl or Stanley Cup or even a golf Grand Slam. As of 2007, only 15 climbers have successful climbed and descended all the 8,000 meter peaks. Reinhold Messner, the great Italian mountaineer, was the first person to climb all 14 peaks. He completed the task in 1986 at age 42, taking 16 years. The next year Polish climber Jerzy Kukuczka was the second, taking only eight years. The first American to climb them all is Ed Viesturs, who completed his quest in 2005. | Mount Everest Elevation: 29,035 feet (8,850 meters) Location: Nepal/Tibet, Asia First Ascent: Sir Edmund Hillary (New Zealand) and Tenzing Norgay (Nepal), May 29, 1953 | | | | | K2 Elevation: 28,253 feet (8,612 meters) Location: Pakistan/China, Asia First Ascent: Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli (Italy), July 31, 1954 | | | | | Kangchenjunga Elevation: 28,169 feet (8,586 meters) Location: Nepal/India, Asia First Ascent: George Band, Joe Brown (UK), May 25, 1955 | | | | | Lhotse Elevation: 27,890 feet (8,501 meters) Location: Nepal, Asia First Ascent: Fritz Luchsinger and Ernst Reiss (Switzerland), May 18, 1956 | | | | | Makalu Elevation: 27,765 feet (8,462 meters) Location: Nepal, Asia First Ascent: Jean Couzy and Lionel Terray (France), May 15, 1955 | | | | | Cho Oyu Elevation: 27,765 feet (8,201 meters) Location: Nepal, Asia First Ascent: Pasang Dawa Lama (Nepal), Joseph Joechler, Herbert Tichy (Italy), October 19, 1954 | | | | | Dhaulagiri Elevation: 26,794 feet (8,167 meters) Location: Nepal, Asia First Ascent: Nawang Dorje, Nima Dorje (Nepal) Kurt Diemberger, Peter Diener, Albin Schelbert (Austria), May 13, 1960 | | | | | Manaslu Elevation: 26,758 feet (8,156 meters) Location: Nepal, Asia First Ascent: Gyalzen Norbu Sherpa (Nepal) & Toshia Imanishi (Japan) May 9, 1956 | | | | | Nanga Parbat Elevation: 26,658 feet (8,125 meters) Location: Pakistan, Asia First Ascent: Sherpa Guide From (Nepal) Hermann Buhl (Austria), July 3, 1953 | | | | | Annapurna Elevation: 26,545 feet (8,091 meters) Location: Nepal, Asia First Ascent: Sherpa Guide (Nepal) Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal (France), June 3, 1950 | | | | | Gasherbrum I Elevation: 26,470 feet (8,068 meters) Location: Pakistan/China, Asia First Ascent: Sherpa Guides (Nepal) Andrew Kauffman and Pete Schoening (United States), July 3, 1958 | | | | | Broad Peak Elevation: 26,400 feet (8,047 meters) Location: Pakistan/China, Asia First Ascent: Hermann Buhl, Kurt Diemberger, Marcus Schmuck, and Fritz Wintersteller (Austria) Climbed with Sherpa Guides (Nepal), June 9, 1957 | | | | | Gasherbrum II Elevation: 26,360 feet (8,035 meters) Location: Pakistan, Asia First Ascent: Josef Larch, Fritz Moravec, and Hans Willenpart (Austria), July 8, 1956 | | | | | Shishapangma Elevation: 26,289 feet (8,013 meters) Location: Tibet/China, Asia First Ascent: Hsu Jing and 9 other climbers (China) May 2, 1964 | |

A. C. Sherpa provided an inside journey of his homeland and took us to places like Namche Bazar, the Tengpoche monastery, KallaPattar near the Everest basecamp and many other wonderful sites culminating in a 3 day climb up Island Peak at over 20,000 feet. This was without doubt a great adventure and spiritual pilgrimage for me and unforgetable memories to behold. ~ Otto Sperka Manager - The Harbor Club Seattle/Bellevu |
