“SEE THE WORLD AND LEND A HAND”

Sir Edmund Hillary - most people know him as the man who, with Tenzing Norgay, first reached the summit of Mount Everest in 1953. What is less well known to many is his dedication to the Sherpas, whose lack of the basic necessities such as schools and healthcare facilities in the remote Himalayas. Sir Edmund's foundation The Hillary Trust has helped to build schools and medical centers at Phaplu, Lukla and Namche area. However, help isn’t equally distributed as numerous Sherpa people also live in the regions below Phaplu.

In 2002, A. C. Sherpa founded Himalayan Women’s and Children’s foundation (HWCF), to bring education and healthcare to people in villages like Tapting, Gohrakhani and Kayrung areas where other organizations are yet to reach. HWCF has been contributing funds since 2002. In 2006 and 2007, HWCF lead volunteers, medical and dental groups to Salleri, where over 1500 women, Children and elderly are treated. Himalayan Women’s and Children’s Foundation continues to move forward to reach people who have the most need.

Salleri and Tapting Dental Clinic, 8,500 feet, Nepal

ImageThe District of Solu Salleri needs more than Lukla or Namche Bazaar. Perched on a terraced slope in Namche Bazaar, sits the world's highest dental clinic. Dr. Alison Han and Dr. Baptistha Kwok have been volunteering at the clinic since 2006. They have provided services such as examination, dental cleaning, filling with composite and amalgam material, extraction and fluoride treatment. Donated toothbrushes, toothpastes, dental flosses and baby toys have been handed to villagers. Numerous Sherpas, Tamang, Rai, Shrestha and Tibetans have been helped during these volunteering trips.

HWCF goal is to help build dental and medical clinics in Tapting and Kayrung in the next five years. We want to travel to 14 villages in the Everest region to teach dental hygiene to women and children with minimal expenses. We would like to train two dental hygienists in each clinic to provide ongoing dental care throughout the year. Only twenty years ago, Sherpas believed tooth decay was caused by evil spirits. Today, school children are teaching their families to brush daily and come to the clinic for check-ups. However, numerous people cannot afford regular dental care. Teaching prevention is the least costly and effective method to improve oral health. Local people are very grateful and impressed by the care we have provided. Some of the patient are over 50yrs old and have never seen a dentist in their life. Two weeks before we got there, we announced to all 32 villages over the Radio and words of mouth have spread. The trips were very successful in 2006 and 2007. We will continue to volunteer every year in these villages.
